Is my van ULEZ compliant?
To drive in London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone without paying, a van up to 3.5 tonnes has to meet these emission standards:
- Diesel vans – Euro 6. As a rough guide, that means most diesel vans registered from September 2016 onwards.
- Petrol vans – Euro 4. Most petrol vans registered from 2006 onwards meet it.
Compliance depends on the van’s emissions rating, not just its age, so the dates are only a guide. The quickest way to be sure is to enter your reg on TfL’s vehicle checker.
What a non-compliant van costs to keep
The ULEZ now covers all of Greater London. A van that doesn’t meet the standards pays £12.50 a day to drive in it, and the charge runs 24 hours a day, every day except Christmas Day. If you miss a payment, you can be sent a penalty charge of £180.
For a van used five days a week, that adds up to about £3,250 a year – often more than an older diesel van is worth. That’s why many owners decide to scrap it and put the money towards a compliant van instead.
Clean air zones outside London
Several other cities charge older vans that don’t meet the same Euro 6 diesel and Euro 4 petrol standards:
- Birmingham – inside the A4540 Middleway ring road
- Bristol and Bath
- Bradford and Sheffield
- Tyneside – parts of Newcastle and Gateshead, including the Tyne bridges
Portsmouth also has a clean air zone, but it doesn’t charge vans. Charges vary from city to city, so check the local council’s website before you drive in.
Is the ULEZ scrappage scheme still open?
No. TfL’s ULEZ scrappage scheme closed to new applications in September 2024, so there are no grants available for scrapping a non-compliant van. You can still scrap it with us and get paid for it.

Non-ULEZ van FAQs
My van isn’t ULEZ compliant but it still runs. Will you take it?
Yes. Runners are welcome, and a van that still drives may be worth more than a non-runner. Tell us about it when you get your quote.
Can I keep driving it until you collect?
Yes, but if you drive it inside a zone you’ll still need to pay the daily charge until it’s collected.
How will I be paid?
By bank transfer when we collect. We don’t pay in cash.
Do I need to tell the DVLA?
No. Your van goes to a licensed Authorised Treatment Facility, which issues your Certificate of Destruction and notifies the DVLA. Any unused road tax is refunded to you automatically.
